Miranda do Douro is a city in the district of Bragança, in the northeast of Portugal, bathed by the rivers Fresno and Douro and on the border with Spain. Located in a mountainous and arid region, but with beautiful landscapes and surrounded by the Douro International Natural Park. Miranda do Douro has a rich natural, social and built heritage, as exemplified by its beautiful old houses, its most imposing monument: the Sé (now Igreja de Santa Maria Maior) from the 16th century, among many other points of interest.
Gastronomy from Trás-os-Montes is an important presence in Miranda do Douro, with its Posta Mirandesa, Bola Doce Mirandesa, Folar de Carne, sausage dishes such as Alheira, Rosquilhas or the famous Pão de Ló.
In the northeast of the national territory, integrated in the district of Bragança, the municipality of Mogadouro borders Spain along the Douro River. Wedged between the deep valley of the Douro and the Sabor basin, it occupies the extension of the Planalto Mirandês which, in turn, gives continuity to the Planalto Leones (Zamora and Salamanca region).
Throughout the area closest to the Douro river, greywacks and granites alternate, appearing either in large blocks or in the form of gravel resulting from their disaggregation. The relief consists of a succession of hills dominated by greywacke schists interrupted by some quartzite outcrops, which rise in the landscape forming mountains. In the south, brown schists abound, which are also dominant in the Sabor basin. These soils, and the characteristics of the climate, provide an abundant and diversified vegetation cover, which gives the landscape a mantle of beautiful colors that change with the seasons.
The village of Vimioso, located in the extreme northeast of Portugal, is located in the heart of the Mirandese plateau, integrating the Terra Fria of Trás-os-Montes. Belonging to the district of Bragança, the municipality of Vimioso is crossed by deep valleys of the rivers Angueira, Maçãs and Sabor.
There are several signs of prehistoric settlement present in the county, exemplified in places and forts, such as Atalaia, Pereiras, the castro da Batoqueira, da Terronha, among others.
Its castle, along with the castle of Algoso, parish of the municipality, integrated the defense line of the eastern border of the kingdom.
